“While still alive, both my father and father-in-law asked me for legal help because they did not see the point to paying for an attorney. One wanted me to give him “will forms” that he could fill in for his last will and testament. The other, a non-practicing attorney, wanted my brother and me to draft his will without involving local counsel.
I, unfortunately, frequently encounter situations where legal mistakes made during a lifetime can create a mess at death, and I didn’t have a problem telling this to my father and father-in-law. I think it’s important for people to understand the consequences of inattention to legal matters and of not involving an attorney. “Penny wise and pound foolish” can be a particularly compelling adage when dealing with legal matters.”
